Mass Shootings in the USA

The Price We Pay for Congressional and Supreme Court Misinterpretations

Mass Shootings in the USA are an epidemic that demands sensible action, but our leaders offer only “thoughts and prayers” instead of solutions. The inaction continues while countless lives are shattered by wonton violence made possible by the

Supreme Court ignoring the Second Amendment’s stated purpose and congressional hubris bought through the lobbying of the National Rifle Association, another fatal error on the part of the Supreme Court allowing unlimited contributions, more properly called ‘bribes,’ through the Citizens United opinion allowing an unlimited flow of money to campaign coffers by corporations and other business enterprises such as industry-wide organizations like the NRA.

Mass Shootings in the USA: A Decline into Chaos

The United States is turning into a 1960s movie version of the Wild West where open carry and street shootouts are the norm, not the exception. At the beginning of the 21st century, we find ourselves without a defense to protect us against the acts of those who would take their AR15 into a school to wantonly murder children indiscriminately or shoppers at their local supermarket, to satisfy some twisted motivation, even the desire to become famous for a horrible act carried out in broad daylight.

Mass Shootings in the USA: A Focus on Leadership

I contend that no American can justify or condone such behavior in a diverse representative republic such as described in the Constitution of the United States. I further contend that the rash of gun violence in the United States would not be

Focusing on Leadership, it is clear that Congress is incapable of acting in the best interest of the nation, rather they have been bought off by the NRA through legal bribery allowed by the Supreme Court in Citizens United.

tolerated had the Supreme Court not misinterpreted the stated purpose of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, that being a “WELL-REGULATED MILITIA” By ignoring that simple purpose, we, as a nation, were thrown into a condition of an unregulated marketplace of violence.

Furthermore, the Court in Citizens United created a condition in which Representatives and Senators are legally bribed to fall in line with the lobbyists who ‘contribute’ large sums of money into their election campaign funds, thus buying their loyalty. It is shameful that we are subjected to such random and wonton violence because 9 justices place the rest of us into a condition of constant fear. That ratio looks something like 9:333,000,000. Something is out of balance.

Mass Shootings in the USA: Constitutional Missteps and the “Well-Regulated Militia”

The Second Amendment explicitly mentions “a well-regulated militia,” yet Supreme Court rulings like District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) focus solely on individual rights. This misinterpretation arms private citizens with military-style weapons while sidelining the regulatory intent. The proliferation of firearms directly contributes to tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, where 20 children and six adults were gunned down in their classrooms. Afterward, politicians sent condolences and prayers but avoided even modest gun control reforms.

The Gun Lobby’s Role in Perpetuating Violence: Mass Shootings in the USA

The National Rifle Association (NRA) capitalizes on fear and deflects blame after each shooting. When a shooter massacred 58 people at the 2017 Las Vegas music festival, the NRA condemned “evil acts” but opposed bans on bump stocks. These devices allow semi-automatic rifles to mimic automatic weapons. Although the Trump administration eventually regulated bump stocks, broader reforms—like banning assault weapons—remained untouched. The NRA continues to use slogans like “guns don’t kill people” to shift attention away from the role of easily accessible firearms.

Congressional Cowardice Following Massacres

Congress habitually fails to act, even after horrifying events. After the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and staff were killed, survivors passionately called for change. Congress, however, offered only condolences. Lawmakers ignored pleas for stronger background checks and assault weapons bans. Instead, they focused on arming teachers, a measure widely opposed by educators and gun control advocates.

Similarly, the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting in 2022 left 19 children and two teachers dead. Police delayed action for over an hour as the shooter slaughtered fourth graders. Despite public outrage, Congress made only incremental changes, such as limited funding for school security and mental health programs. Substantial reforms like banning AR-15-style weapons, which the shooter used, remain elusive.

Mass Shootings in the USA: The Price Paid for Congressional Cowardness

Shootings occur in every corner of American life: schools, supermarkets, concerts, and churches. In 2023, a shooter in Allen, Texas, used an AR-15 to kill eight shoppers at a mall, including three children. Officials expressed sorrow but avoided proposing any measures that could save lives. Similarly, the Buffalo supermarket shooting in 2022, where a white supremacist murdered 10 Black Americans, led to symbolic condemnations of hate but no meaningful gun legislation.

Each massacre adds to a grim tally of lives lost, met with public grief and a parade of “thoughts and prayers.” No legislation has curtailed access to weapons of war, despite their repeated use in mass killings. Congress’s fear of NRA-funded political backlash ensures the cycle continues.

The Path Forward

Stopping mass shootings requires bold reforms. Universal background checks, red flag laws, and assault weapon ban work in other nations. For example, Australia enacted strict gun control after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre and hasn’t experienced a mass shooting since. Activist movements like March for Our Lives highlight the urgency, but lawmakers refuse to act on the public’s demand for safety.

Americans must demand more than thoughts and prayers from their elected leaders. Lives depend on courage in Congress and at the Supreme Court and pressure by everyday average American patriots.
